For instance, the Roman army's superiority derived from its organization, discipline, and manpower, not from technological advantages over its rivals, and its weaponry remained largely consistent for centuries. Even in ancient China, gunpowder, invented by Daoist alchemists, was used primarily for firecrackers for 600 years before becoming a decisive military factor, underscoring that the systematic pursuit and application of military technology as a strategic imperative is a recent historical phenomenon.
