The Marriage of Science and European Imperialism

Modern science and European imperialism developed inseparably, with science flourishing precisely because of its deep entanglement with imperial expansion. While ancient traditions provided foundations, modern science's unique character solidified hand-in-hand with the imperial endeavors of Spain, Portugal, Britain, France, Russia, and the Netherlands. Even though non-European cultures contributed valuable insights, it was the ruling and intellectual elites of the global European empires who systematically collated these discoveries, thereby creating and defining scientific disciplines like Newtonian physics and Darwinian biology until the mid-20th century.

The core historical bond between science and imperialism lay in a shared mindset: both scientists and conquerors began by admitting ignorance, expressing, 'I don't know what's out there.' This compelled them to explore and discover, driven by the hope that new knowledge would grant them mastery over the world. This approach differentiated European imperialism from all previous imperial projects, which typically sought power and wealth by imposing a pre-existing worldview, rather than actively venturing into the unknown in pursuit of new knowledge and territory.

Over centuries, the conquest of knowledge and territory became increasingly intertwined. Early voyagers like Prince Henry the Navigator, Christopher Columbus, and Ferdinand Magellan combined exploration with claiming sovereignty over new lands. By the 18th and 19th centuries, virtually every significant military expedition departing Europe for distant shores included scientists focused on discovery. For example, Napoleon's 1798 invasion of Egypt was accompanied by 165 scholars who founded Egyptology, and Charles Darwin joined the HMS Beagle's navy-funded mapping expedition in 1831, collecting empirical data for his theory of evolution. This symbiosis meant that empire-building was inherently a scientific project, and scientific discipline creation, an imperial one.
