Dynamic programming solves problems by synthesizing solutions to subproblems, akin to the divide-and-conquer method, but uniquely applies when subproblems overlap. Unlike divide-and-conquer, which may repeatedly solve identical subsubproblems, dynamic programming ensures each subsubproblem is computed only once. Its solution is then stored in a table, avoiding subsequent recomputation and illustrating a fundamental time-memory trade-off that can transform exponential-time algorithms into polynomial-time solutions.

Developing a dynamic-programming algorithm follows a structured four-step process. First, the structure of an optimal solution is characterized. Second, the value of an optimal solution is recursively defined. Third, this value is computed, often in a bottom-up manner, ensuring that all necessary smaller subproblem solutions are available. Fourth, if required, the actual optimal solution is constructed from the stored information; this step can be omitted if only the optimal value is needed. A dynamic programming approach is polynomial-time efficient if the number of distinct subproblems is polynomial in input size and each can be solved in polynomial time.

The rod-cutting problem serves as a prime example, where a rod of length `n` must be cut to maximize revenue, given prices `pi` for pieces of length `i`. For a 4-inch rod, cutting into two 2-inch pieces (each priced `p2=5`) yields an optimal revenue of 10. A naive recursive solution, `rn = max(pi + rn-i)` for `1 <= i <= n`, leads to an exponential running time `T(n) = 2^n` due to redundant computations. Dynamic programming resolves this inefficiency through either a top-down approach with memoization or a bottom-up iterative method, both achieving an optimal `O(n^2)` running time. To reconstruct the optimal sequence of cuts, additional information—such as the size of the first piece in an optimal solution for each subproblem—is stored, allowing a solution like '1 and 6' for a 7-inch rod to be traced.
