Chapter 2: The Search for New Meaning
Key Insight 4 from this chapter

The Distinct Nature and Impact of Innovation of Meaning

Key Insight

Innovation today occurs in two distinct forms: innovation of solutions and innovation of meaning. Innovation of solutions focuses on the 'how,' providing answers to existing problems by improving performance, such as creating a brighter candle flame to enhance illumination. Conversely, innovation of meaning addresses the 'why,' proposing new purposes or interpretations that captivate individuals, like Yankee Candle's vision of candles creating emotional warmth through fragrance. This form of innovation offers people a 'new why' to use a product, embodying a fundamentally different purpose.

The core differences are stark: solutions address 'negativities' by solving problems, while meaning addresses 'positivities' by offering value, worth, and new opportunities, often perceived as a 'gift.' Solutions are 'answers' to determinate needs, whereas meaning is a 'proposal' that engages people in a process of inquiry and exploration. Solutions target the 'user' and the act of 'using' a product, optimizing for 'better' performance. Innovation of meaning, however, elevates to the 'person' and the 'why of living,' competing on 'value' by redefining what is meaningful and valuable, making it inherently more disruptive as it can transcend existing users and product categories.

Innovation of meaning contributes in two key ways: it expands the range of meaningful directions (e.g., mobile phones evolving from communication to camera or music devices), and it provides clearer interpretations to navigate complex choices (e.g., the iPhone simplifying the smartphone landscape with a clear 'personal device' vision). While innovation of solutions is more frequent and often follows innovation of meaning to enhance the new direction (like Yankee Candle's continuous stream of new fragrances and formats), the crucial distinction is that a single powerful innovation of meaning can entirely reshape a competitive landscape, captivating people by offering something unexpected and deeply valuable to their lives as individuals, not just as users.
