Key Insight
The interpreter's lab is a structured group meeting designed to challenge internal assumptions about what is meaningful to people, with the goal of fostering deep reflection rather than generating specific ideas. Meticulous preparation is essential, including briefing interpreters 2 to 3 weeks prior to the meeting. The briefing clearly defines the target people and their relevant life experiences. Instead of revealing strategic directions, the team shares 'assumption questions' derived from their internal 'meaning factory' to allow interpreters to offer unbiased insights.
During the meeting, assumption questions are grouped into themes, and each interpreter leads the discussion on a chosen theme. The lead interpreter begins by presenting a metaphor (e.g., an object, song, picture) to convey their emotional and symbolic interpretation, then provides background on their research or experience and their interpretation of the theme. Subsequently, other interpreters and the internal team contribute their views, highlighting differing insights ('clashing') and offering explanations for these varied perspectives ('fusing'), with the aim of comparing and understanding, not converging on a single vision.
A critical post-lab debriefing session is conducted by the internal team on the day following the meeting. Insights, initially noted on Post-its and organized by themes, are then re-categorized according to the meaning directions envisioned in the 'meaning factory.' This process enables the team to reframe their interpretations, assessing the ongoing meaningfulness of existing directions, deciding on refinements, or considering abandonment. Insights that do not align with existing directions may signal overlooked meanings, leading to new scenarios and potential solutions for subsequent user testing via probes or minimal viable products.
