Key Insight 2 from this chapter

The Continuing Lives and Struggles of Henrietta Lacks's Descendants and Associated Figures

Key Insight

Following a significant family baptism, the lives of Henrietta's children continued with mixed fortunes. Bobbette and Lawrence carried on, with Lawrence occasionally contemplating legal action against Hopkins. Sonny underwent a quintuple bypass in 2003 at 56, resulting in $125000 of debt due to a lack of health insurance. During his surgery, he was told his mother's cells were among medicine's most important developments. Zakariyya faced persistent challenges, including evictions from an assisted-living facility and Section Eight housing, where he assaulted a woman by smashing a 40-ounce beer bottle on her back and pushing her through a plate-glass window; he occasionally worked with Sonny driving a truck.

Despite the family's hardships, some of Henrietta's descendants achieved notable successes. Erika, granddaughter of Lawrence and Bobbette, became the first of Henrietta's descendants to pursue graduate studies, entering a master's program in psychology after earning her bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland, inspired by her great-grandmother's story. Deborah's grandson, Davon, 17, was nearing high school graduation and had pledged to attend college to continue learning about Henrietta. In contrast, Deborah's son, Alfred Carter Jr., was incarcerated, serving a 30-year sentence for robbery with a dangerous weapon and first-degree assault with a handgun. While imprisoned, he completed drug and alcohol rehabilitation, earned his GED, and taught GED classes to other inmates for $25 per month, also expressing a desire to repay the money he stole.

The whereabouts of Dr. Sir Lord Keenan Kester Cofield remained unknown. His prior record included several years in prison for attempting to purchase jewelry with a stolen check, during which he filed multiple lawsuits. In 2008, after his release, Cofield filed a 75-page lawsuit, which a judge deemed 'incomprehensible.' This suit targeted 226 parties, seeking over $10 billion, and argued that all previous decisions in his cases should be reversed in his favor, additionally claiming copyright on his name. The narrator was unable to establish contact with Cofield for an interview regarding a book.
