Chapter 31: Do What You Set Out to Do
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

The Drive to Achieve Results and Effective Leadership

Key Insight

Success hinges on pushing through to results, a critical fifth step in the 5-Step Process. This intense drive is fueled by diverse motivations, including the vivid visualization of success or the tragic consequences of failure, a deep sense of responsibility, attachment to a community's mission, desire for approval, or financial rewards. All these motivations are valid and should be harmonized within an organization's culture to propel individuals and teams forward. The personal experience of accumulating significant work, such as thousands of research pages, almost 10000 daily observations, and an 800-page book manuscript, exemplifies the substantial effort involved in achieving goals.

Effective leadership is paramount in mobilizing people to achieve these results. Leaders must recruit individuals willing to perform the often mundane and distasteful tasks essential for success, as glamour typically resides in new ideas, not the persistent hard work of identifying and resolving problems. For instance, a Client Service Department, through relentless effort, transformed from an area of concern regarding memos to an exemplary team with consistently high client satisfaction. This demonstrated that addressing underlying issues, even those unnoticed by clients, is crucial to prevent reputational damage and maintain pervasive excellence. Leaders must also ensure teams work towards exciting goals, connecting daily tasks to larger objectives, recognizing that undesirable work is often a necessary component.

Moreover, leaders foster coordinated and consistent motivation within groups, acknowledging unique challenges and advantages. While individuals have personal reasons, aligning the community on goals and methods is key to avoid disparate incentives, like one group receiving large bonuses while another under similar circumstances does not. The strength of groups lies in their ability to combine diverse qualities needed for success, rather than finding all in one person, by leveraging individual strengths and weaknesses. Crucially, thinking before acting, investing time in a game plan to make execution more effective, and actively seeking creative, 'cut-through' solutions when facing thorny problems instead of simply working harder, are vital leadership tenets.
