Key Insight
Sustaining high-quality relationships within an organization requires clear principles, starting with unwavering loyalty to the common mission, not to individuals whose actions diverge from it, which can cause factionalism. Clarity on the 'quid pro quo' is essential, defining what constitutes generosity, fairness, and exploitation in relationships. This includes aligning on core values beyond just compensation, recognizing that if choices arise between values and easy profit, conflicts emerge when motivations are solely financial.
Relationships are strengthened by distinguishing between fairness and generosity. For example, providing a shuttle bus for some employees is an act of generosity, not an entitlement for others to demand equivalent compensation for their own travel costs. Similarly, giving a more expensive gift to one friend over another is generosity, not unfairness. The principle is to operate 'on the far side of fair,' meaning giving more consideration to others' interests than one demands for oneself. Compensation must also be economically viable and clearly defined, balancing payment for work with flexibility for extra hours or time off, with adjustments for sustained changes in needs.
Organizational growth poses a threat to meaningful relationships, as the sense of community diminishes beyond groups of approximately 50 to 100 people. To counteract this, forming smaller collective units bound by the mission is crucial for scaling relationships in larger companies. A critical awareness is that many individuals will prioritize their self-interest, such as maximizing earnings while minimizing work, particularly when unsupervised or when advising on matters impacting their own compensation (e.g., lawyers, salespeople). Therefore, it is important to proactively foster meaningful work and relationships, while realistically acknowledging that a segment of the population may not care for or may even harm the community, and to highly value honorable, capable individuals who act with integrity even when unobserved, as these relationships are rare and take time to build.
