Key Insight
The Hook Model is a framework designed to frequently connect a user’s problem with a designer’s solution to form a habit, aiming for long-term engagement. As users progress through its cycles, they learn to satisfy their needs using the product. Effective hooks transition users from relying on external cues to internal mental associations, ultimately moving them from low to high engagement and from low to high product preference.
Building effective hooks involves asking five fundamental questions. The first question focuses on the 'Internal Trigger': 'What do users really want?' and 'What pain is your product relieving?'. This probes the core emotional or psychological need. The second question addresses the 'External Trigger': 'What brings users to your service?', identifying the initial prompt or information that leads a user to the product.
The third question considers 'Action': 'What is the simplest action users take in anticipation of reward, and how can you simplify your product to make this action easier?'. The fourth question delves into 'Variable Reward': 'Are users fulfilled by the reward, yet left wanting more?', ensuring the reward is engaging but encourages continued use. The final question is about 'Investment': 'What “bit of work” do users invest in your product? Does it load the next trigger and store value to improve the product with use?', which examines how user input enhances future engagement and the product itself.
