Chapter 3: Action
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

The Fogg Behavior Model for Action

Key Insight

The action phase is a critical step in forming habits, following an initial trigger. For a user to take action, the desired behavior must be significantly easier to perform than to consciously consider. A habit is defined as a behavior executed with minimal or no conscious thought; consequently, any increase in physical or mental effort required to complete an action directly reduces its likelihood.

The Fogg Behavior Model, represented by the formula B = MAT, identifies three simultaneous and sufficiently present ingredients necessary for any behavior (B) to occur: Motivation (M), Ability (A), and a Trigger (T). If any of these components are missing or inadequate, the user will not 'cross the Action Line,' and the behavior will not manifest. For example, not answering a ringing mobile phone (trigger) could be due to limited ability (phone buried in a bag), lack of motivation (perceived telemarketer), or the absence of an audible trigger (silenced ringer) despite motivation and accessibility.

While a trigger serves to cue an action, motivation dictates the user's level of desire to engage in that action. This chapter focuses on delving deeper into motivation and ability, building upon prior discussions of triggers. The ultimate aim is to facilitate the simplest possible action from the user, anticipating a rewarding outcome that propels them further through the habit-forming cycle.
