The ACT Framework for Enhancing Organizational Performance
Key Economic Insight
For any organization to function optimally, three core principles – Accountability, Coaching, and Transparency (ACT) – must be integrated into every level and meeting. Accountability means clearly defining a destination, such as a company vision, Objectives and Key Results (OKRs), or Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), outlining the specific actions required to reach it, and then rigorously tracking whether those actions were completed and the destination achieved. This systematic approach ensures that goals are not just set but actively pursued and measured.
Coaching involves a regular assessment of the health of an entity, whether an individual, team, department, or the entire company, identifying both successes and areas needing improvement. Crucially, for 'not good' areas, it entails detailing the issue and proposing solutions. This also serves as a critical channel for team members to request help and guidance from their managers, fostering a supportive environment for problem-solving and continuous improvement.
Transparency is the third pillar, requiring open feedback to managers, peers, and reports using a specific 'Like' and 'Wish that' framework. This involves stating 'specific actions that I like that you are doing' and 'specific actions that I wish you would do differently.' The ACT framework must be applied bi-directionally, from the CEO down to individual team members and vice-versa, and consistently across all organizational layers. Implementing this framework typically involves dedicating a full day each week to internal meetings, an investment of 20 percent of the standard workweek, which is essential for ensuring large teams understand priorities and for leaders to receive necessary feedback.
