Chapter 2: The Third Phase
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

The Evolution of Religious Experience

Key Insight

Humanity's spiritual journey is envisioned in three distinct phases. The initial phase is characterized by fear, where early individuals, lacking knowledge of natural laws, attributed adverse events like hunger, sickness, and death to malevolent forces or 'illusory beings.' These beings were then appeased through specific actions and sacrifices, a practice considered 'not unreasonable' given the limited understanding of causal connections at the time. However, early 'proto-scientists' gradually began to challenge and undermine the concept of gods as angry and capricious entities.

The second phase introduced social or moral religions, marked by the evolution of a 'God of justice' who was 'humanized and comprehensible,' offering 'guidance and consolation.' All familiar world religions fall into this phase, representing a significant improvement by providing solace and a moral framework. Nevertheless, this phase was criticized for promoting 'blind faith' in 'fairytales about creation,' hindering 'open inquiry,' and frequently failing to uphold its 'lofty ideals.' Historical examples include 'the hate the Church manifested against the Jews and then against the Muslims,' the 'Crusades with their crimes,' the 'burning stakes of the Inquisition,' and 'tacit consent of Hitler’s actions' during mass slaughter.

The third phase, or cosmic religious feeling, transcends these earlier stages by moving beyond paralyzing fear or blind obedience. It embodies a continuous spiritual quest, a commitment to 'keep climbing' towards a deeper understanding, requiring 'no dogma, no priestly caste, no humanized God.' This spirituality is universally accessible to 'receptive individuals' across all times and places, emphasizing an individual's connection to the Infinite, expressed as 'I am a part of infinity.' It actively encourages scientific inquiry, viewing it as the 'strongest and noblest motive' for research, and integrates new knowledge to foster 'a deep reverence for the natural world' and 'a hallowed respect for the human mind,' striving for 'rational knowledge' over traditional faith.
