Pythagoras, born around 570 B.C.E. on Samos, initiated a sacred tradition rooted in the insight that numbers reveal reality. Renowned as 'one of the greatest Greek teachers,' he undertook a self-guided pilgrimage, studying for approximately twenty years in Egypt and the Near East, absorbing diverse wisdom in mathematics, geometry, vegetarianism, reincarnation, meditation, and memory techniques. He founded philosophical schools, first on Samos and later in Croton, Italy, where he gathered thousands of followers. The core tenet of his school was that the cosmos is maintained by a hidden harmony, best understood through mathematics.

Pythagoras coined the terms 'philosopher' and 'cosmos,' the latter signifying a beautiful, orderly world arrangement. Beyond number reverence, he was the first to state 'the earth is spherical' and identify Venus as both the morning and evening star. Around 400 B.C.E., the Pythagorean Philolaus championed a heliocentric model of the solar system. Pythagoreans also advanced medicine, notably locating 'reason and mind in the brain,' and figures like Democedes and Alcmaeon (who traced the optic nerve) studied diseases scientifically in Croton. Archytas, another prominent Pythagorean, was a pioneer in applied mathematics and mechanics.

The Pythagoreans were a deeply religious community, integrating sophisticated science with passionate spiritual practice. Pythagoras himself engaged in intensive spiritual retreats in places like Mount Carmel and Egyptian temples, often fasting and meditating in solitude for extended periods. His disciples underwent a rigorous scientific-spiritual program, including five years of silence, commitment to truth, diligent learning, emotional equanimity, and systematic memory exercises. Central teachings included reincarnation, implying a kinship among all animated beings, which led to abstaining from animal food. This comprehensive training aimed at harmonious human development and perception of cosmic structures, believing 'Number was Harmonia' and 'numbers are the elements of all things,' seeing mathematics as a mystical path to divine reality, synthesizing science and spirituality.
