Chapter 8: Part of Infinity
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

The Illusion of Individuality and the Quest for Cosmic Consciousness

Key Insight

A fundamental belief held that individuality is an 'optical delusion of consciousness,' and liberating oneself from this illusion constitutes the essence of true religion. This realization does not necessitate withdrawal from the world; rather, every aspect of existence—from birth and death to the vastness of space—offers avenues to experience Infinity. The ultimate goal is to dismantle the separation between microcosm and macrocosm, recognizing a universal origin billions of years ago, and fostering communion with the cosmos to serve the entirety of the human community.

A deeper understanding revealed a significant limitation in human self-perception, where the concept of 'I' is an illusion stemming from language, leading to widespread anguish, insecurity, loneliness, and a diminished capacity for simple enjoyment of life. The core of cosmic religion lies in overcoming these limitations and freeing humanity from its ego through a fundamental 'modification of the mind.' This ancient quest, spanning religious and scientific strivings, aims for 'freedom from the Ego' to perceive profound connections uniting all things, from the smallest life-forms to distant galaxies. The central insight is the experience of being 'a part of infinity.'

This perspective aligns with ancient philosophical traditions. Spinoza declared 'The mind is eternal insofar as it conceives things under a form of eternity,' and Schopenhauer spoke of transcending individuality through 'reabsorption in Brahman, or the Nirvana of the Buddhists.' Such transcendent experiences involve perceiving the distinction between past, present, and future as merely a 'stubbornly persistent illusion' and merging with nature, where 'life and death flow into one.' This culminates in a metaphysical monism, asserting that 'Body and soul are not two different things,' but different perceptions of the same reality, with both physics and psychology serving as attempts to systematically link human experiences.
