Chapter 9: A Magnificent Synthesis
Key Insight 2 from this chapter

Wolfgang Pauli's Pursuit of Psycho-Physical Monism

Key Insight

A prominent physicist, known for his scientific contributions, secretly embarked on a profound quest for a 'holistic union of psyche and physis'. Driven by a desire to find a 'new ("neutral") psycho-physical standard language', he aimed to describe the 'invisible, potential form of reality' from which both mind and matter originate. This deeply personal exploration, which included diving into his unconscious mind, was largely kept from public view due to his apprehension of being perceived as a mystic or insane, which could jeopardize his esteemed position as one of the 'three kings of quantum mechanics' and the 'conscience of physics'.

Following a series of personal tragedies around 1927, including his mother's suicide and a divorce, and amidst escalating alcohol consumption, he sought help from a renowned psychologist in 1931. Recognizing the physicist's 'extraordinary personality', the psychologist arranged for him to be analyzed by a junior associate, ensuring 'unprejudiced observation'. Over several months, the physicist produced an astonishing series of over 1000 dreams, many spontaneously illustrated, demonstrating a unique genius for inner exploration. These dreams became the foundation for a detailed study of the unconscious and the process of individuation.

This marked the beginning of a nearly three-decade-long friendship and professional collaboration between the physicist and the psychologist, who even co-authored a book. Their shared obsession was to discover a way of merging mind and matter; the physicist viewed 'physics and psychology as complementary types of examination', aiming to fuse natural forces and unite matter and mind into a system he termed 'psycho-physical monism'. The psychologist, in turn, sought 'a psychic analogue of physical energy'. Interestingly, the initial spark for the psychologist's thinking about 'a possible relativity of time as well as space and their psychic conditionality', which later led to his engagement with the physicist, stemmed from quiet dinners with another celebrated physicist between 1909 and 1912. Together, the pair spent approximately two decades searching for 'a synthesis embracing the rational understanding as well as the mystic experience of one-ness'.
