Chapter 7: A Conscious Freedom
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

Determinism and the Nature of Human Freedom

Key Insight

A strong stance on determinism posited that humans and all things are interwoven in a seamless tapestry, governed by physical law and evolutionary heritage. True autonomy within such an integrated totality was deemed nonsensical, with the explicit belief that 'Everything is determined, the beginning as well as the end, by forces over which we have no control,' encompassing 'the insect as well as for the star.' This position denied fundamental free will and moral responsibility, asserting that a person's actions are 'determined by necessity external and internal,' and humans are not 'free agents' but subject to 'the inexorable laws of cause and effect.'

The traditional 'billiard ball' model of causality was critiqued as too simplistic, noting that cause and effect are simultaneous interactions between systems, rather than a linear sequence, a concept evident in complex scenarios like binary star systems where causality becomes ambiguous. The embrace of determinism stemmed from the 'mind-boggling mutuality' of infinite universal interactions, which led to the conclusion that 'all individuality and all independence were ultimately illusory.' From a philosophical perspective, dividing things into distinct objects with linear cause-effect relationships was considered a 'simplistic superstition,' though acknowledged as convenient for practical functioning.

Despite earlier deterministic views, later thought recognized that human beings' 'incredible complexity' — including memory, the capacity to make new mental combinations, and oral communication — conferred a unique 'conscious freedom' and variability not dictated by biological necessities. It was argued that 'inward freedom' is an 'infrequent gift of nature' that requires 'constant and conscious pursuit' and 'a good deal of conscious thought and of self-education' to overcome inherent passive, mechanical tendencies. This cultivation of agency enables individuals to 'influence his life through his own conduct' and achieve an 'independence of thought.' Ultimately, it was agreed that individuals are essential nodes in the spacetime network, playing an active role in determining the pattern of interrelation, making 'what we do' of 'supreme importance to all humanity, to history, to human destiny.'
