Key Insight
Contrary to popular belief in a homeostatic organizational world where imbalances are corrected and rule-breakers sanctioned, most social processes actually amplify existing advantages and perpetuate power and status. This phenomenon is consistent with the 'Matthew Effect,' originating from biblical scripture, which states, 'For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them' (Matthew 25:29). This principle describes a pervasive process of cumulative advantage.
Cumulative advantage illustrates how initial comparative advantages, whether in trained capacity, structural location, or available resources, lead to continuous increments of benefit, thereby widening the gap between those who possess more and those who possess less across various social domains. For example, in science, more prominent, prestigious scientists receive disproportionate recognition for subsequent scholarly contributions, even if those contributions were jointly produced. Similarly, in social networks, 'more connected nodes are destined to acquire many more links in the future,' demonstrating a preferential attachment mechanism.
This self-reinforcing cycle is driven by multiple social forces. Powerful and successful individuals are more likely to attract talented collaborators and receive greater investment, which in turn enhances their prospects for future success and performance. Additionally, confirmation bias plays a crucial role; once someone has achieved success, that individual will be perceived as continually successful, irrespective of objective results. People pay more attention to confirming information, remember facts that align with their perceptions, and selectively forget contradictory details, thus reinforcing initial advantages through cognitive processes of attention, memory, and a preference for belief consistency.
