The expedition began with a conscious acceptance of danger, with a 26-foot boat and four scientists navigating open water near pack ice, equipped with extensive survival gear including flares, suits, and a week's food. Daily checklists and radio communications ensured safety protocols were met, and a note detailing their plan was left at base camp. This meticulous preparation underscored the serious, yet calm, approach of the experienced scientists.

Around noon, while drifting for lunch, an imperceptible shift in the ice pack suddenly cut them off from open water, pinning their boat 200 yards from freedom as a three-day storm approached. They knew the floes could crush their vessel or lift it for shelter. Working silently, they used ice chisels and twin 90-horsepower engines, straining to push their 3000-pound boat through any momentary opening towards a small patch of clear water, even resorting to winching it completely out of the water over weathered pressure ice using improvised anchors, lines, and block and tackle.

After an intense struggle, they finally broke free, bursting through a rapidly closing channel with roaring engines, executing a 120-degree turn as ice was chopped ahead and props were cleared. Once in open water, they faced six-foot seas and an unseen shore, having been carried unknown miles east by the storm. Despite the overwhelming conditions and the physical toll which led to disassociation and hypothermia for one member, they maintained resolve, implemented strategies like erecting a canvas shelter, and eventually found Pingok Island, anchoring to safety and recovering from their exhaustion.
