Muskoxen exhibit unique social and defensive behaviors. Herd sizes range from 2 to 10 animals in summer to over 60 in winter, with compositions changing frequently, but they maintain cohesive social arrangements. When threatened by predators, they typically draw together, sometimes quickly, often forming a rosette formation, rump to rump, with calves and yearlings wedged between adults for protection. Bulls make short, hooking charges from this formation, a highly effective defense against wolves.

Rutting behavior, from mid-August to mid-September, involves intense male-on-male interactions. Displays range from passive displacement and head raising to vigorous gland rubbing below the eye, ground raking with horns, and head tilting, often leading to 'parallel walking'. The most serious confrontations are head butts and charges, where bulls clash head-to-head from 20 to 30 feet apart, producing a sound like fracturing sea ice. These encounters, sometimes fatal, are stylized and often occur on flat terrain.

Mating involves bulls approaching receptive females with sniffing, chin resting on buttocks, neck nosing, and sometimes a bellow described as 'similar to the roar of a caged African lion'. Mating occurs when the female remains stationary. Calves are born 240 to 250 days later, between mid-April and mid-May, already precocious enough to stand and run quickly, well-insulated, and nourished by ample adipose (brown) fat reserves. Calves typically nurse for about 15 months and utilize their mother's body as a shield against wind during rest.
