Key Insight 2 from this chapter

Muskox Physical Characteristics and Cold Adaptations

Key Insight

Muskoxen, stoutly built ruminants, possess distinct physical traits aiding their polar existence. Mature males average 650 pounds and stand 55 inches at the shoulder, measuring 90 inches from nose to rump, while females average 400 pounds, 48 inches at the shoulder, and 75 inches in length. Their most striking feature is a long, glossy skirt of guard hair, complemented by a short tail and roundly pointed ears almost hidden within a thick ruff of hair.

Exceptional insulation is provided by an extremely dense underfur, about 2 inches long, covering most of the body except hooves, horns, and a patch between nostrils and lips. This underfur is 8 times warmer than sheep's wool by weight, and as soft as pashm, with a single animal yielding up to 10 pounds. Guard hairs, up to 25 inches long, form a skirt, mane, and black covering on the rump and flanks, while the legs below the heel are white. This thick coat is so effective that snow accumulating on their backs does not melt.

Their adaptations extend to their sensory organs and movement. Large, protruding eyes with a double retina intensify images in low light, and a horizontal slit pupil, protected by corpora nigra, prevents snowblindness and glare. Broad, sharp-edged hooves with concave bottoms provide excellent traction and are used to paw through snow and ice. Muskoxen maintain a constant body temperature of about 101°F even at -40°F, conserving heat through their insulation, metabolic processes, and behavioral strategies like 'standing hibernation' and moving in single file to minimize energy expenditure in cold.
