Gender inequality is closely intertwined with fertility rates, with societies exhibiting greater power imbalances between men and women tending to have higher numbers of children per woman. This dynamic is exacerbated by women's unique biological costs of reproduction, including maternal mortality, which increases with the number of births. For example, in 2008, the average Afghani woman had 6.6 children and a 9 percent chance of dying from reproductive complications, with higher-than-average parity dramatically increasing this risk.

The disproportionate cost for women in reproducing both parents' genes means that as the number of children increases, a woman's sacrifice grows significantly greater than the father's. This fuels gender inequality, as male dominance can lead to a more rapid multiplication of their tribe. Ethnocentrist factions within any group, therefore, tend to favor relatively more gender inequality because it translates into higher birth rates and quicker group expansion.

The preference for male babies, evident in many conservative cultures, further illustrates this imbalance. Males are often valued for inheriting property and lineage, and possess a higher theoretical reproductive potential. In contrast, females are dispersed to other clans and have a more limited reproductive window. This cultural and evolutionary bias reinforces gender inequality, turning women in high-fertility societies into 'baby-making machines' at a substantial cost to their health and autonomy, and demonstrating why this issue is a central focus of global development goals.
