Chapter 4: The Biology of Family Conflict
Key Insight 1 from this chapter

Evolutionary Basis of Parent-Offspring and Sibling Conflict

Key Insight

The theory of Parent-Offspring Conflict posits that offspring are active agents striving to maximize their own reproductive success by extracting more parental investment than parents are selected to give. Parents, conversely, aim to distribute resources equally among all offspring and conserve some for their own health and future reproduction. While offspring seek an 'unfair' share, their extractive efforts are limited, as excessively endangering a parent could halt resource flow and jeopardize the offspring's survival.

Sibling rivalry is rooted in this struggle for resources; an offspring views siblings as competitors diverting parental investment, which could reduce its own fitness. A genetic asymmetry drives this: an offspring shares 100% of its genes with itself but only 50% with a full sibling (or 25% with a half-sibling), thus prioritizing its own survival. In contrast, a parent shares 50% of its genes with each child and aims for equal distribution to maximize its overall fitness across all offspring.

These divergent interests lead to conflicts over the duration and amount of parental investment and the degree of altruism offspring show towards siblings. Such inherent conflicts make discipline a universal aspect of childrearing. Offspring may employ 'psychological weapons' like deceptively withholding signals of satiation to receive more food, or 'regression' to earlier, less mature behaviors to garner more investment, particularly in species where young are dependent for many years.
