Key Insight
Hospice care offers a critical alternative to traditional medicine for the terminally ill, shifting the focus from cure to comfort and quality of life. Its goal is to help patients achieve the fullest possible lives in their remaining time, addressing priorities like freedom from pain and discomfort, maintaining mental awareness, and spending meaningful time with family. This is achieved through a multidisciplinary team including nurses, doctors, chaplains, and social workers, who support patients typically in their homes.
Contrary to a common misconception, hospice care does not necessarily hasten death. Studies have shown that for patients with breast, prostate, or colon cancer, there was no difference in survival time between those who received hospice care and those who did not. Remarkably, for certain conditions, hospice care appeared to extend survival; patients with pancreatic cancer gained an average of three weeks, those with lung cancer six weeks, and those with congestive heart failure three months, suggesting that a focus on patient well-being can paradoxically prolong life.
The integration of hospice and palliative care has shown significant benefits, as demonstrated by Aetna's 'concurrent care' program. By allowing patients to receive hospice services without having to forgo other treatments, hospice enrollment jumped from 26 percent to 70 percent. This program also resulted in patients visiting the emergency room half as often, reducing hospital and ICU use by more than two-thirds, and lowering overall costs by almost a quarter, indicating that supporting patients' holistic needs can lead to better outcomes and reduced healthcare expenditures.
