A faction known as 'the Loyals' is orchestrating a 'violent insurgence' against Lowe, the current Alpha. Max, a fifteen-year-old, attempted to kidnap Ana to use her as 'leverage' to force Lowe to step down. This insurgency also involves 'sabotaging important infrastructure' and 'brutally attack[ing] huddles who support' Lowe. Max believes Roscoe's mate, Emery, is behind these actions, though he did not directly communicate with her.

Lowe deliberately contrasts his leadership with that of the former Alpha, Roscoe, who 'killed the Weres on his own' and avoided alliances. In contrast, Lowe has formed alliances with Vampyres and Humans, and he explicitly states he does not 'hurt my own, especially not children.' During the interrogation, Lowe employed a calculated strategy. While his seconds, Cal and Ken, made threats of physical harm, this was a 'show' intended to scare Max, as Lowe's true intention was to extract information without resorting to Roscoe's brutal methods. The Weres demonstrated strong pack discipline and deference to Lowe.
