Chapter 15: Some Considerations Concerning the Present State and Probable Future of the Three Races That Inhabit the Territory of the United States
Key Insight 21 from this chapter

Inevitable Expansion and Future Dominance of the Anglo-American Race

Key Insight

The Anglo-American race is destined to expand beyond the current borders of the United States, already pushing into territories like Canada to the northeast and Mexico to the southwest. This expansion has been historically observed, as French settlements in North America were overwhelmed and absorbed. The New World is effectively shared by two rival races, Spanish and English, but the English race holds an 'immense preponderance' in civilization, industry, and power.

The Anglo-Americans will inevitably invade sparsely populated regions beyond treaties, appropriating land and establishing their language and mores, as seen in Texas, where Mexicans are rapidly being supplanted. This unchecked expansion is fueled by their spirit of enterprise and the sheer inducements of fertile wilderness. Neither political changes, wars, nor anarchy can halt this 'gradual and steady progress,' which is likened to a 'human flood' driven by Providence.

In a period deemed 'imminent,' the Anglo-Americans alone will blanket the vast region from the polar ice cap to the tropics, stretching from the Atlantic to the South Seas, eventually covering an area three-quarters the size of Europe. Given its favorable climate and natural advantages, this region will support a population proportionate to Europe's. Despite potential future internal differences, the descendants of this race will share a common social state, usages, and ideas, leading to 150,000,000 people, 'all equal to one another, all members of the same family,' a phenomenon unprecedented in the world.
